Yenagoa—Armed men, suspected to be pirates, opened fire on a police patrol team, killing one of the officers at new Ogbia-Nembe Road in Bayelsa State, Monday. Two of the hoodlums were reportedly killed.
The incident, it was learned, occurred at about 4.10pm, close to Obioma Bridge on Ogbia stretch of the road in Ogbia Local Government Area.
While the deceased policeman was identified as a sergeant, the identity of the dead hoodlums could not be immediately ascertained as their bodies were reportedly taken away by their gang members.
An account had it about 10 armed men came from the river and laid siege to Obioma Bridge, disposse-ssing commuters of valuables and cash, when the police patrol team, Operation Doo Akpo, responded

These are definitely not the best of times for the All Progressive Congress (APC) and its Presidential Flag bearer, General Muhammadu Buhari

After a tumultuous week – which began with filing a lawsuit against several Local News Outlets for airing a libelous Documentary about his past stint as Head of State, and culminated in nationwide outcry over his refusal to debate on another platform yet again – it seems General Buhari will now have to contend with problems from outside Nigeria’s shores.

This is because, according to information reaching our desk this morning, Korean Megastar Musician, PSY, famous for his hit song GANGNAM STYLE (which was the first song to reach 1 billion views on YouTube), has allegedly dragged the APC Presidential Flag Bearer and his campaign team to the Hague for apparent Copyright infringement.

In the suite filed at the International Court of Justice at about 1330hrs GMT yesterday, Korean Megastar PSY alleged that the APC’s usage of the Campaign Slogan #SaiBuhari was illegal, as he alone owned the copyrights to the word PSY and any homonyms of the word, no matter the spelling, including PSAI, S-HIGH, and most notably, SAI.

We were able to reach the Asian Superstar on the phone for comments, and this is what he had to say

“After Gangnam Style brew up, I tell rawyer, rawyer, this song is so popurar, and my name now so popurar, what we do? Rawyer say, we trademark name, we copyright name and all name that sound like name. So I go Patent Office in Seoul and copyright own name of PSY and also all word that sound like PSY, like PSAI and SAI too. I have pape to prove this. The Patent number is 766K-12. So I so shock when I put on terevision and I see Old man wear toga and cap, carry broom and make crowd shout my name SAI BUHARI! SAI BUHARI! SAI BUHARI! I no believe own ear of Psy”

“I like, who this man? Why he use PSY name no take permission! This disprease Psy! I call rawyer and he say we go to court. I like, which APC SUED OVER USE OF “SAI BUHARI” SLOGAN we go? He say we no go rocal Korea court, we go International Court. Now we court. ICJ say Mr Buhari must come court or erse he go prison for rong rong time. This what PSY do”.

We have tried to reach the APC for comments, but so far ou efforts hasve been fruitless. In the meantime, General Buhari, APC Chairman Chief John Oyegun, and all the APC Big Wigs on twitter have been issued Writ of Summons to appear before the ICJ on or before the 11th of February, or risk Grave sanctions.

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives
Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on
Tuesday said any public official who betrayed the trust of
Nigerians and illegally enriched himself under his
administration would be made to face the full wrath of the
law.
He promised Nigerians that there would be no hiding place
for corrupt elected officials, including governors and all
other government officials in his administration.
Buhari gave the assurance at the presidential rally held at
the Pantami International Stadium, Gombe.
He said, “We must do away with corruption as well as
develop the Nigerian economy, if we are elected into office
by the grace of God, any elected official that is elected or
appointed to serve under me must be transparent, because
if any of them embezzles public funds, he will face the
consequences.”
The presidential hopeful also promised to boost electricity
supply in all parts of the country. He also pledged to revive
moribund industries in order to address unemployment.
“Our youths are suffering and walking round the streets
without employment but we will strive to make them
gainfully employed, so as to disengage them from vices
that can destroy their future,” Buhari stated.
The APC presidential candidate said he would also look into
ways of collaborating with advanced countries to revamp
the agricultural sector. He said schools would also be given
a facelift and qualified teachers would be recruited.
Also speaking at the rally, the National Chairman of the
party, John Odigie-Oyegun, called on the Nigerian public to
vote massively for the APC in the forthcoming elections to
guarantee progress and development.
He urged all party faithful to obtain their Permanent Voter
Cards so as to have the opportunity to elect candidates of
their choice.
The party’s leader in Gombe State, Senator Danjuma Goje,
described Buhari as the architect of change.
He urged all supporters of the party to vote out the
Peoples Democratic Party by turning out in large number on
election days and also defend their votes by ensuring that
the votes were counted in their presence.
The governorship candidate of the party in the state, Alhaji
Inuwa Yahaya, expressed optimism that the APC would win
elections in Gombe State come February 14 and 28.
The Gombe APC Presidential rally, which was the 34th in
the series, was well attended and it ended peacefully.

The northern socio-political organisation, Arewa
Consultative Forum, has warned Niger Delta ex-militants
not to threaten a former Chief of Army Staff, Gen.
Theophilus Danjuma (retd.).
The northern group said neither Danjuma nor any citizen of
the country for that matter should be threatened with
attacks by the ex-militants, who have been threatening fire
and brimstone should President Goodluck Jonathan loses
the February 14 presidential poll.
The ex-militants had threatened to attack Danjuma’s
business interest in the Niger Delta for daring to ask that
security agencies should arrest leader of the Niger Delta
Peoples Volunteer Force, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari;and other
ex-militants.
Dokubo-Asari, Victor Ben Ebikabowei a.k.a Boy Loaf;
Government Ekpudomenowei, a.k.a Tompolo and other
militants had, during a meeting at the Bayelse State
Government House, vowed to unleash violence on Nigerians
if Jonathan failed in his re-election bid.
They said any attempt to unseat the President would be
seen as a direct affront to the Ijaw nation.
The ACF said it viewed the threat by the ex-militants as
not only a direct affront on Danjuma but on the President
Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal Government.
National Publicity Secretary of the ACF, Muhammadu
Ibrahim, in a statement in Kaduna on Monday, said, “ACF
and indeed all Nigerians hold Gen T.Y. Danjuma, former
Chief of Army Staff and Defence Minister in high esteem,
as a revered patriot, elder statesman and a philanthropist
of repute who fought for the unity of Nigeria and has
continued to play this fatherly role even in his old age.
“ACF will therefore not accept any threat to his person or
business assets or to any law-abiding citizen by any group
or individuals in the name of militancy.”
The northern body therefore asked security operatives to
take urgent steps to avert what it described as “ugly
consequences” of war threats by the ex-militants.
Danjuma had penultimate Wednesday asked the Federal
Government to as a matter of urgency arrest the Niger
Delta ex-militants who threatened war in the country if
Nigerians failed to re-elect Jonathan.
Danjuma spoke at the inauguration of Kwakwasiya City in
Kano.
He had said, “You should arrest Dokubo-Asari, Tompolo,
Boyloaf and other Niger Delta militants for making reckless
statements, which in any way does not mean keeping
Nigeria as one entity and creating war situation.
“Those were reckless statements coming from
irresponsible individuals; they should be condemned and be
arrested immediately.”
Neither President Jonathan nor the Federal Government
has reacted to the threat by the former militants.
The ACF warned that nothing must tamper with the
business empire of Danjuma because there was nothing
wrong with his call for the arrest of ex-militants that had
been threatening the peace of the entire country.
The ACF reminded the ex-militants that the President was
not elected by Nigerians in 2011 based on threat or
intimidation from any section of the country.
It stressed, “ACF wishes to remind the Niger Delta
militants that President Jonathan did not ascend to his
present position through threats and intimidation, but
rather through democratic means of canvassing for votes
without any form of molestation throughout the length and
breadth of Nigeria in 2011.
“The same process the President and other candidates
vying for the office shall go through to emerge as Nigeria’s
President in 2015 and not through intimidation, threats and
ultimatum.
“ACF therefore views such threats and intimidation by the
ex-militants as an affront not only to Gen. Danjuma but an
attack on a democratically elected Federal Government of
Nigeria, over which President Jonathan presides.
“It is also an open challenge to the nation’s security
agencies, especially the Nigeria Police Force, the
Department of State Security and even the Nigerian military
that are responsible for maintaining law and order and any
form of internal and external aggression against Nigeria.
“ACF hereby calls upon the Federal Government to urgently
take necessary steps and contain this emerging threat to
national security by Niger Delta ex- militants to avert any
ugly consequences.”

Close family members, employees, the Nigerian
manufacturing industry and the nation in general, is
mourning the death of the late Chancellor of the Lagos
State University, Chief Molade Okoya-Thomas.
According to family sources, Okoya-Thomas passed away
on Sunday, February 1. He was 79.
His daughter, Jumoke, told our correspondent on the phone
that the industrialist was ill sometime in December, but
had recovered and was back in form until Sunday.
“His death took all of us by surprise,” she said.
Jumoke added that the late billionaire was a father to all
and expressed the same degree of kindness to all his
children.
Until his death, he was acknowledged as the Asoju Oba of
Lagos, Babasuwa of Ijebu-Remo and Odofin of Ife. He was
also the chairman of the CFAO Nigeria Limited.
The Group Managing Director, CFAO, Mr. Stephen Faderin,
said the late Okoya-Thomas was more than a boss to all
the employees of the company.
He said, “He was like a father to all of us. Personally, I
have known him for 35 years and he was my first boss.
The biggest lesson I learnt from him is the lesson of
humility. He was the most humble man I have ever known.
He does not discriminate between the driver and the
manager; he addresses all of us with the same level of
humility, kindness and friendship.”
Marketing communications expert who consults for CFAO,
Oscar Odiboh, said, “He was very hardworking; a father to
so many people. He went out of his way to render help and
never said ‘no’ to anybody. He also helped the careers of
many young people. He ensured that people around him
understood and appreciated family values.”
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, in a press
statement by his media office in Abuja, noted that the late
Okoya-Thomas was a visionary and astute businessman
whose contribution to Nigeria’s private sector economy will
remain indelible.
“Although the late Molade Okoya-Thomas left the stage at a
prime age of 79, his death nonetheless is a huge blow to
the community of businessmen in Nigeria.
“He was a pioneer and a visionary leader. Okoya-Thomas
belonged to a generation of private sector investors who
saw opportunities in making investments in the economy
when it was risky to do so,” the statement read.
The President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and
Industry, Mr. Remi Bello, described the deceased as a
great industrialist and good sports promoter.
In a short text message to our correspondent, Bello wrote,
“His death is shocking. His death is not good at this time.
He would be highly missed.”
Economic analyst and professor of Economics at the
Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Prof. Sherifdeen
Tella, expressed shock at the death of Okoya-Thomas,
noting that it was a time when the nation’s economy would
miss his mark most.
He also expressed hope that the industrialist left behind a
succession arrangement that would ensure that his good
legacy continued.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives
Congress, Maj.-Gen. Muhammad Buhari (retd), on Monday
said if elected on February 14, he would ban the
importation of basic items like rice and tomato in order to
enhance local production of the products.
He also said his administration would focus on agriculture,
mining, infrastructure and job provision at the top of its
economic agenda.
Buhari, who gave a summary of how he intended to revive
the economy in a meeting with the Organised Private
Sector in Lagos, said his government would place
emphasis on three key issues of security, tackling
corruption and reviving the ailing economy.
The meeting, which had all the key members of the APC in
attendance, was hosted by the Lagos State Governor, Mr.
Babatunde Fashola.
“How can Nigeria be importing virtually everything? How
can we be importing even tomatoes? If I am elected, basic
items like rice and tomatoes, which we have the capacity
to produce, will be banned from being imported,” Buhari
said.
The APC presidential candidate said his commitment to the
Nigerian people would be governed by the highest
consideration for how his policies would create jobs.
He also said he would focus on the provision of
infrastructure such as power and roads.
Buhari, who said he agreed with the current administration
on the privatisation of the power utilities, however, said
there would be a need to also privatise the transmission
segment.
According to him, the privatisation of the power sector has
yet to achieve the desired result because after the handing
over of the assets to private investors, the hard work to
connect the various parts of the power chain, supply gas,
install transformers and complete substations has not
been done.
He added, “Our studies show that we will require no less
than 200,000 trained personnel to support the initiative to
provide power and light up Nigeria.
“Apart from the inherent direct employment that this will
give, the reduction in the cost of production, the savings
from self-generation by Nigerians, who currently spend a
lot of their income on purchase of diesel and petrol to
generate their own electricity, will reduce the burden on
their disposable income.”
An existing plan to build a refinery in Lagos will be
supported by the Federal Government, according to Buhari.
Another area of infrastructure investment that will receive
attention, according to him, is road and highway
construction from one end of the country to the other.
He said his administration would concentrate on roads and
highways that linked the states, while state governments
would be expected to connect their respective areas to the
highways.
Buhari said, “Road construction alone will unlock value
chain of opportunities for construction companies,
builders, engineers, architects, quarry operators, cement
and iron rod producers and suppliers.
“The successful opening up of Nigeria by the construction
of new roads and highways will revive road transport, truck
manufacture, tyre manufacture as well as engine oil and
brake pad production on one hand. It will also create a
demand for job for mechanics, drivers and those engaged
in transport support businesses.
“We expect a revival of all the interstate economies to
thrive across Nigeria, providing support to travellers by way
of canteens, restaurants, farm produce etc.”
He, however, said because corruption was affecting the
performance of the economy, he would tackle it headlong if
elected into office.
According to him, the alleged $20bn missing crude oil
proceeds, which was estimated to be equal to about
N4.2tn, were nearly a year’s budget.
He said with N5m per vehicle, the amount could provide
840,000 patrol vehicles to help improve on the security of
towns and villages across the country.
The APC presidential candidate also noted that the amount
could provide 311,000 buses that could revolutionise the
transport sector of the economy.
He said, “If the average cost of generating one megawatt
of power is about $1.5m (excluding gas and distribution
costs), $20bn would have brought us over 13,333MW of
power. What a difference that will make in the country!

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday formally received
the report of forensic auditors engaged to carry out a
detailed investigation into the activities of the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation.
An accounting firm, PriceWaterHouse, was last year hired
to carry out the exercise following an allegation by the
former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido
Sanusi, that $20bn was not remitted to the Federation
Account by the NNPC.
Sanusi, who is now the Emir of Kano, had written a letter
to Jonathan that $49bn was not remitted to the Federation
Account by the NNPC.
But following the controversy which the letter generated, a
committee was set up to reconcile the account.
Sanusi later recanted and said the unremitted fund was
$12bn. He later again changed the figure to $20bn.
The Nigeria Country Senior Partner of PriceWaterHouse,
Uyi Akpata, on Monday presented the report to the
President on behalf of the firm saying, “It is a privilege for
us to have carried out this exercise on behalf of the
government and I hope that you will find this report useful.”
Akpata did not give any insight into the forensic report.
In accepting the report however, Jonathan noted that the
media and indeed Nigeria would be interested in the
findings.
To this end, he directed the Auditor-General of the
Federation to study the report and make the key highlights
public within the week.
He said, “There has been so much of controversy over this
NNPC and leakages or no leakages. I remember the Senate
has also looked into it, it is also good that you
professionals have also looked into it.
“What appears in the papers and the speculations is also
very high, the figures that I cannot even imagine the
country will make is being bandied in the newspapers.
“So, I am quite pleased that you have undertaken the
forensic audit. Though it is voluminous, I will give it to the
professionals.
“In government work, there are people that have the
statutory responsibilities to handle such assignment which
is the Auditor-General of the Federation.
“So, the Auditor-General will look at it and within the week,
let us have key highlights because the media will want to
know the key findings vis-a-vis the Senate’s findings and
figures being bandied around in the newspapers.”

Like the proverbial hunter that became hunted, an armed robbery suspect has told how he narrowly escaped death in the hands of his victim. A four-armed robbery gang had invaded the premises of a powerful politician in Lagos.

The incident got to the attention of the state Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko who swiftly ordered the officer in charge of the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) Abba Keyari to fish out the hoodlums. The efforts of the police paid off as they arrested the suspects. One of the suspects in an interview with Crimewatch denied using gun to attack the politician.

He said: “Really, we attacked the man but the man was too strong to defeat. We used pliers to break the kitchen window protector and gained entry. We started packing his laptop, phones and other things.” “As we were packing his things, the man woke up and grabbed me. He was too strong for me to handle, so he started beating me. He did not stop at hitting me, he also bit me.

His teeth were shaper than knife. He was biting me like a wounded lion. In fact, that man is a lion. He is too powerful. As he was hitting and biting me, I was shouting for help but my colleagues abandoned me. “How I managed to escape, I cannot tell. I was half dead.

When I left the house. If the man had beaten me more than he did, I would have died. He is too strong so, that is why I am saying no to the claim by the police that we were armed, if we had a gun, we would have fired him, rather we escaped from him.” Showing some wounds on his body, he said, “look at my body, all the injuries were from the man. He even injured me on my penis. He beat me black and blue.”

On who owned the locally made pistol the police claimed they recovered from him, he said: “I am not saying that I don’t have a gun at home, I have but I don’t use it for robbery. I only use it to protect myself at home. For that robbery, I swear to my ancestors, we did not use gun that day.” His suspected accomplice, Sheidu Busari, who the police named as the leader of the gang, corroborated Jimo’s story, “we did not use gun that day but my friend Jimo has a gun, but we did not go with it that fateful day. We only used big pliers to break through the window.

We gained entry but when the man grabbed Jimo, and he was shouting like a baby, I thought the man has stabbed him or had charmed him so I took to my heels. I did not know it was ordinary biting that was scaring Jimo. Jimo (Jamio) used to be strong that was why I was confused and scared when he was crying like a baby.”

Busari who was just released from the prisons for the same armed robbery, said “I was only sent to prison for buying a stolen phone but my elder brother later bought my freedom with N200,000.” On why he went back to crime he said, “don’t you know that Christmas is fast approaching. I need money for Christmas so, when we got information that the man we attacked was wealthy, I had no alternative than to go for the robbery.”

He regretted that the operation was not all that successful. “I swear, the robbery was a bad one. We did not make money, yet, it brought another trouble to me. See now, I will be spending the Christmas in the prison.” Lagos State police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, said one locally-made pistol with six rounds of live cartridges, one HP Laptop, and one Nokia 200 were recovered from the suspects.
